About Your Adult Pet    Adult Pet Wellness Package

About Your Adult PetTop of Page

Did you know that most dogs and cats are adults by age 2? Once they are adults, the health needs of your pets are different than the needs they had when they were puppies or kittens. While we continue to protect them from certain similar diseases, we also need to consider that their nutirional, physical, and behavioral needs change as well.

Your dog or cat will continue to need vaccines each year in order to keep them protected against diseases.

For dogs, the first Rabies vaccine provides protection for one year.  A booster is needed at the end of the first year, then every 3 years after that. The Bordatella and Distemper/Parvo vaccines will need to be given yearly in order to provide your dog with the best prevention against those diseases.

For cats, the Rabies vaccine is given yearly, as well as the FVRCP vaccine, which protects them against Feline Distemper and other viruses.  If you have outdoor cats, or cats that come in contact with outdoor cats, they may need a yearly vaccine for Feline Leukemia, and/or Feline AIDS.

The vaccine regimen may vary according to your pet's specific lifestyle or heath needs. Please discuss your pet's lifestyle with Dr. McIntyre to determine which vaccines will be needed.

Wellness exams are recommended two times per year, as your pet can age as much as 7 years in 1 year. We also recommend having your pet's stool checked for intestinal parasites such as roundworms or tapeworms.  Dogs and cats don't always pass worms in their stool or show signs of infection, so it can be very difficult to know without an intestinal parasite exam. These parasites can not only cause health issues for your pet, but many can be transmitted to humans! We also recommend monthly flea, tick, and heartworm prevention to help keep your pet healthy.

Annual laboratory blood tests are recommended to check your pet's organs and overall health status. Combined with a physical exam, this helps us know what is "normal" for your pet. It also helps us to catch any potential problems early, and to treat or slow the progression of any disorders that we may find.
